 WMU-Cooley student elected national organization’s board

WMU-Cooley Law School student Porscha Brown recently was elected secretary of the National Black Law Student Association (NBLSA).

“This is a great honor,” noted Christopher Lewis, director of enrollment and student services at WMU-Cooley, adding that Brown will represent WMU-Cooley well.
 
Brown, a second-year law student from Virginia Beach, Va., is pursuing the school’s self-directed track, focusing on transactions.

Brown has been an active participant at WMU-Cooley’s BLSA, has received a humanitarian award from the campus organization, and was a member of the four-student team representing WMU-Cooley at the
Midwest BLSA Mock Trial competition in Minneapolis, Minn. She also participated in the NBLSA Nelson Mandela International Negotiation Competition in Milwaukee, where she and her competition partner Jeremy Bowie made it to the quarter-finals.

“Becoming the secretary for the 2014-15 administration is a new challenge for me,” Brown said. “I am constantly pushing myself to do bigger and better things. I have always been the type of person who loves to help others, and being a part of this organization will allow me to help others on a higher level.”

The NBLSA was founded in 1968 by Algernon Johnson Cooper at New York University.
 

Seminar on Business Court Technology and Innovation Oct. 29

The Detroit Legal and Technology Group will sponsor a program titled “Business Court Technology and Innovation” on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Courtroom 1B of the Oakland County Circuit Court, 1200 N. Telegraph Road in Pontiac. 
 
Business Court Judges Wendy Potts and James Alexander will be the featured speakers and will provide an overview of the Oakland Business Court operation, which began in June 2013. 
Those attending should plan on arriving before 5 p.m.
