Wayne Law charity drive doubles goal, collects 600 pounds of food

Local families in need will benefit this holiday season from 600 pounds of food donated through a Wayne State University Law School charity drive.

Wayne Law’s Student Affairs office conducted the food drive in late November and early December for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.

The goal had been set at 300 pounds, but students, faculty and staff brought in double that amount of non-perishable food items.

The drive was assisted by an added incentive from Barbri, which offered $25 off its bar examination study content to any first-year law student who brought in a food item Tuesday, Nov. 18.
Melody Andrews, Student Affairs secretary, headed up the food drive.

“I hadn’t done a food drive on such a large scale,” Andrews said. “I thought my expectation of 300 pounds was grand, but we doubled it. I smiled for two days.”

Gleaners picked up the food Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Bill OK’d to require school  cyberbullying policies

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan school districts would have to include cyberbullying in their anti-bullying policies and report bullying data to the state under a bill moving ahead in the Legislature.

The Senate voted 30-7 to approve the requirements Tuesday. The legislation goes to the House for consideration as lawmakers near the end of their lame-duck session.

The bill is designed to address gaps in a 2011 law that requires K-12 districts and charter schools to have anti-bullying policies on the books.

Sen. Glenn Anderson, the bill sponsor, says bullying done through social media, texting and instant messaging is probably more prevalent now than physical bullying. The Westland Democrat is hoping Gov. Rick Snyder’s support ensures the legislation will win final approval from legislators next week.

Opponents of the bill question how schools and the state are supposed to stop cyberbullying often done outside school grounds.
