State Bar Barristers Section holding annual ‘Happy Feet’ sock drive
Staying warm in the winter can be a tough challenge for the homeless and needy, particularly when they are unable to keep their feet dry. Through January 15, the State Bar of Michigan Barristers Section is collecting new and gently used socks for participants in the Fort Street Open Door program. Recipients receive a pair to wear and a pair to dry, so we can help make sure everyone has "Happy Feet."

Phase-in of new Belle Isle access set to be completed by Feb. 1
DETROIT (AP) — The state is getting ready to complete the phase-in of recreation passports to allow access to Detroit’s Belle Isle park.
February marks the anniversary of Belle Isle operating as Michigan’s 102nd state park. Starting Feb. 1, all vehicles entering Belle Isle will need a recreation passport.
During the past year, vehicles could access the island park without a recreation passport until the vehicle owner’s next registration renewal date. Starting Feb. 1, Belle Isle visitors driving without a recreation passport will be required to purchase a window sticker at the park.
Pedestrians, bicyclists and those using public transportation can enter the park for free.
Belle Isle became a state park under a 30-year lease agreement with Detroit. Recreation passports are required for vehicles entering Michigan's state parks.
Chief Justice Young supports keeping age limit for judges
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s chief justice says he supports an age limit for judges but believes it probably could be raised to account for longevity and advances in medicine.
A number of Michigan judges didn’t seek another term in November because the state's Constitution says candidates can’t run if they’ve turned 70. Chief Justice Robert Young Jr. says he’s not in favor of eliminating an age restriction.
Young, who is 63, says a key issue for any judge is keeping the mind sharp. Without an age limit, he says it would be very difficult to remove a judge whose skills are fading.
Any change in the Michigan Constitution would require approval by voters. Young tells The Associated Press that persuading people to raise the limit to 75 isn’t a high priority.
LAD to conduct free outreach clinic Jan. 8
Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc.
