Man gets life, no parole in bouncer slaying at nightclub

DETROIT (AP) — One of two men convicted in the fatal shooting of an anti-crime advocate and Detroit nightclub bouncer will spend the rest of his life in prison.
The Detroit News says that Carl Bruner was sentenced Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Co-defendant Michael Lawson will be sentenced at a later date.
A jury found the pair guilty of first-degree murder last month in the killing 39-year-old Marcel Jackson at Club Pandemonium. Jackson was a member of the crime prevention community group Detroit 300.
Jackson had kicked a man out of the club for hitting a woman before the June 2012 shooting. The man returned with an accomplice and shot Jackson in the back.
Bruner and Lawson were arrested two years later. It's unclear who did the shooting.

Advisory from AG Bill Schuette: ‘Lose Weight, Not Money’

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan’s attorney general says people looking to make 2015 a healthier year should make educated choices about health club and fitness center memberships.
Bill Schuette says in a statement that some “may see New Year’s resolutions as an opportunity to take advantage of people who are genuinely trying to make a positive lifestyle change.” Schuette says everyone should carefully review information before signing up.
A consumer alert that’s being issued by Schuette’s office is titled “Lose Weight, Not Money.”
His office’s Consumer Protection Division last year received 61 complaints from Michigan consumers about health clubs and fitness centers. The majority of the complaints involved discrepancies between what consumers say they were told and what signed contracts stated.

Sheriff: Man in court for assault of officer knocks out deputy
DETROIT (AP) — A suburban Detroit man already in trouble for an assault on a police officer last month has been arrested on accusations he hit and knocked out a sheriff's deputy at a courthouse.
The Detroit News says that 29-year-old Deandre Wilson was with his caseworker at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit on Friday when he struck 32-year-old Deputy Crystal Dominguez in the head.
Sheriff Benny Napoleon says Wilson was in court for a hearing on charges of assaulting a Taylor police officer last month.
Wilson was arraigned Saturday on fresh charges of resisting and obstructing a police officer. A judge in Romulus set his bond at $300,000 and scheduled a Jan. 15 probable cause hearing in Detroit District Court.
It’s unknown if Wilson has a lawyer.
