Store receipt helps solve elk poaching case

GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) - A store receipt discovered in the remains of an elk has helped authorities solve a poaching case in northern Michigan.

The Department of Natural Resources says a Jackson County man has confessed to killing the male elk last fall in Otsego County. Investigators cracked the case with some unusual evidence.

Lt. Jim Gorno says a receipt for a gift card from a Detroit-area grocery store was found in the elk's entrails, which were dumped in five places. He says interviews based on that receipt led investigators to a man who knew the identity of the shooter.

Gorno says the Otsego County prosecutor is considering charges. It's hard to get an elk license. Thousands of hunters apply but only 100 were granted last year.

Brighton
Critic of proposed charter school arrested at event

BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) - A critic of a proposed charter school in Brighton has been arrested for trespassing at an open house event hosted by the school's organizers.

Glenn Ikens tells WHMI-FM he attended Saturday's gathering at the former Lindbom Elementary School so he could learn more about the proposed curriculum planned for the school that will be in his neighborhood.

He says he was told he wasn't welcome and police were called. He was booked on a misdemeanor trespassing charge and released on $500 bond.

Jay McNally, a spokesman for the proposed Livingston Classical Academy, says Ikens' past criticism of the school and its founder was enough to warrant his removal. McNally says Ikens has repeatedly given inaccurate information about the proposed school.

Ikens says he had every intention of being respectful.
