US Attorney to monitor probe of fatal shooting by ICE agent
DETROIT (AP) — U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade says her office will closely monitor the investigation into the fatal shooting of a Detroit man by a federal agent who was part of a fugitive apprehension team seeking him on a warrant.
McQuade said Tuesday that "police work sometimes requires use of deadly force, but officers may use only as much force as is reasonable under the circumstances."
An autopsy shows 20-year-old Terrance Kellom died of multiple gunshot wounds following Monday's confrontation with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in a west side home.
ICE says Kellom was wanted on armed robbery and weapons charges. State Corrections records list him as a probation absconder.
ICE and Detroit police are separately investigating Kellom's slaying. Neither agency commented Tuesday on the case.
Michigan Court of Appeals celebrates 50 years of service with special session and panel
The Michigan Court of Appeals is commemorating 50 years of service this year with a Special Session of Court and Historic Panel. Emmy Award-winning Detroit news anchor and reporter Christy McDonald will moderate the panel comprised of former MSC Justice Michael F. Cavanagh; former COA Judge William C. Whitbeck; Norman Otto Stockmeyer, former COA Research Director; Denise Devine, COA Information Systems Director; and Julie Isola Ruecke, COA Research Director.
The event is Thursday, April 30 from 3-5 p.m. at Michigan Hall of Justice, 925 W. Ottawa Street, Lansing.
The 1963 Michigan Constitution created the Court of Appeals as Michigan’s intermediate appellate court, serving between the trial benches and the Michigan Supreme Court, and the Legislature later passed implementing legislation. Since it heard its first cases in January 1965 opening, 82 judges have served on the Court, the Court has issued over 151,700 dispositive opinions dealing with many of the most important legal issues that have faced the State of Michigan and its people, and the Court has been widely recognized as one of the premier intermediate appellate courts in the country.
OCBA to host Signature Event
The Oakland County Bar Foundation will host its 16th Annual Signature Event on Friday, May 1, from 7-10 p.m. at Oakland Hills Country Club. The event provides funding support for the OCBF’s legal aid and legal education work in the community.
