Attorney to speak on open source patents in electric and hybrid vehicles at The Battery Show
Kelly Burris, managing partner of the Detroit office of Brinks Gilson & Lione, will serve as a conference speaker at The Battery Show 2015, to be held Sept. 15 -17 at the Novi Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. The Battery Show is widely acknowledged as the meeting place for the North American energy storage industry.
Burris will present “The Growth of Open-Source Patents in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles” on September 17 at 11 a.m. in the Open Tech Forum section of the exhibit hall.
Following Tesla’s dramatic announcement in 2014 that it was opening its patent portfolio to anyone who wanted to use its technology for the advancement of electric vehicles, several OEMs, including Toyota, Hyundai and Kia have followed suit.
At Brinks, Burris is chair of the firm’s Green Technology Practice Group. She focuses her practice on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications in the mechanical, materials science, and electrical arts.
Joseph Toia named to 16th Circuit Court in Macomb County
Gov. Rick Snyder Monday announced the appointment of Joseph Toia, of Shelby Charter Township, to the 16th Circuit Court of Macomb County.
“Throughout his career, Joseph has distinguished himself as an excellent lawyer and as a leader in community service,” Snyder said. “I am confident that his experience will prove to be a great asset to the Macomb Circuit Court.”
Currently, Toia runs his own practice in Shelby Charter Township and also serves as the prosecuting attorney for the Charter Township of Orion. He has worked on a broad variety of legal matters throughout his career, with considerable experience in the areas of business, family, criminal, and municipal law.
Toia is very active in his community, currently serving as a member of Kiwanis Club of Utica-Shelby and the Fraternal Order of Police, and a growing charitable organization he started called ‘Friends of Foster Kids’, which provides holiday presents to local children in foster care. Toia is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Macomb County Bar, the American Bar Association, and the Italian American Bar Association. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Wayne State University and a degree from the Detroit College of Law.
Toia fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John C. Foster.
He must seek election in November 2016 for the balance of the term expiring January 1, 2021.
