LAD vice president of marketing and development dies

Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) will host a memorial service for Roger S. Lennert, its late vice president of marketing and development, on Friday, Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the amphitheater of its headquarters at 613 Abbott St.

Lennert died of cancer Sept. 7 at his home in the city. He was 71.

Lennert joined LAD in May 2001. His responsibilities included marketing and public relations, fundraising, management training and strategic planning. He also served as an adjunct instructor at Baker College.

“Roger will be remembered for so many things and in so many ways,” said LAD President and CEO Deierdre L. Weir. “His absence will leave a hole in our minds and hearts that can’t be filled. He will be missed in more ways than we at LAD can count. We have lost a colleague, a great guy, and most importantly — a friend.”

Before joining LAD, Lennert was a partner in the public relations firm of Durocher Dixson Werba LLC. Previously, he was executive director of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and its foundation for 21 years.

Lennert also served as an interim director of the Alliance for a Safer, Greater Detroit and communications manager of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. He also held communications positions with MichCon, Ex-Cell-O Corp. and Campbell-Ewald Co.

Lennert earned a B.A. degree from Wayne State University and an M.A. degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix.

Lennert is survived by his wife, Cynthia Ellison; his sister and her husband, Linda and James Heffernan of Chapel Hill, N.C.; his sister-in-law, Susan Lennert, widow of his late brother, David Lennert, of Cincinnati, Ohio; six nephews and nieces, and 16 grand nieces and nephews.

Condolences may be sent to Bedelia Brown at (313) 967-5619 or bbrown@ladadetroit.org.
