Arizona judge to receive Pursuit of Justice Award

The American Bar Association Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section will honor Maricopa County (Ariz.) Judge Daniel Emerson Nastro (Ret.) with its Pursuit of Justice Award. The award, which recognizes lawyers and judges who have shown outstanding merit and who excel in providing access to justice for all, will be presented at the TIPS welcome reception on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. at the Fall Leadership Meeting at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"Over the course of his career, Judge Nastro has worked tirelessly to increase efficiency in our courtrooms with his unique gift of framing negotiations and dedication toward resolution," TIPS Chair G. Nastro began his career as a hearing officer for the boards of medical examiners and dental examiners; and departments of health services, liquor, real estate and insurance. He then served as the on-call court commissioner for Maricopa County Superior Court before becoming judge pro tempore.

While serving as judge pro tempore, Nastro heard criminal, civil, special assignment and domestic relations cases. He was then appointed to the Maricopa County Superior Court. He also served in a multitude of leadership positions including chairman of Judicial Selection Advisory Board for Phoenix Municipal Court and chairman of the Indigency Determination/Contribution Attorney's Fees Committee.

Nastro presided over experimental binding, advisory and interactive summary jury trials from 1990 to 1996. In 1992, he received the Honorable Henry S. Stevens Award presented by the Maricopa County Bar Association for Outstanding Service to the Legal Profession. He also received the Jurist of the Year Award presented by the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association and was recognized with an Appreciation for Outstanding Service Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates.
