Lt. Gov. Calley and others to address drug addiction and recover at Cooley event Nov. 12


 On Thursday, Nov. 12, WMU-Cooley Law School will present “Paradigm Shift: Changing Law and Education to Better Support Addiction Recovery” from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Auburn Hills campus. This unique and comprehensive conference will focus on improving addiction recovery support within our criminal justice and educational systems, and will feature nationally recognized speakers, including Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley; Craig DeRoche, former Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives and executive director of the Justice Fellowship in Washington, D.C.; Ivana Grahovac, executive director of Transforming Youth Recovery; and Michael Johnson, founder of the Justice/Quade Recovery Institute.

Others scheduled to speak include: Patrick Corbett, assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan; Ljubisa Dragovic, Oakland County medical examiner; Judge Linda Davis of the 41B Sobriety Court and founder of Families Against Narcotics (FAN); Kristen Harper, executive director of Association of Recovery Schools; Deborah Garrett, communications director for REAL Michigan; and Matt Statman, director of the University of Michigan Collegiate Recovery Program.

The conference will include a continental breakfast, lunch, and a chance to network with fellow conference attendees and speakers. A panel discussion of individuals who have experienced criminal consequences due to their additions will present. Speakers will address the need for criminal justice reform to support addiction recovery, substance abuse in our youths, and the importance of collegiate and high school recovery programs. Calley will provide closing remarks.

Justice Viviano to help honor seven veterans graduating from Veterans Treatment Court
 

Michigan Supreme Court Justice David F. Viviano will attend a ceremony ?Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. for seven veterans who graduate from the 16th Circuit Court Veterans Treatment Court. The program is hosted in partnership between the 16th Circuit Court, led by Judge Mark Switalski, and the 41B District Court, led by Judge Carrie Fuca. The two courts join dockets to provide treatment and assistance to military veterans in the criminal justice system.

The ceremony honors the latest graduates of this intensive 18- to 24-month-program that focuses on providing legal and rehabilitative treatment to offenders who are military veterans. Veterans receive assistance from a mentor, guidance from a parole officer, and additional leadership from either a circuit court or district judge.
