New Lawyers’ Seminar, swearing-in ceremony set for Dec. 8 and 9

The annual seminar for new lawyers, a “nuts and bolts” how-to-do-it approach to practice in federal and state courts which is co-sponsored by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, will be held at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse, on Dec. 8 and 9.

The seminar is designed to assist recent law graduates in understanding the fundamental procedures followed in local courts. It is not a prerequisite for an individual to be admitted to practice in the courts, but rather is a voluntary educational program which law school graduates are encouraged to attend. Experienced attorneys wishing to attend the seminar are welcome.

The seminar begins at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 8 with registration and presentations on federal courts. The program continues on Dec. 9 with state court practice. In prior years, the seminar faculty has been composed of practicing attorneys, court personnel and numerous judges, each of them knowledgeable in the areas upon which they speak.

The seminar price is $100 for both days with an attorney’s first year of chapter membership as a complimentary bonus. Admission also includes a luncheon on Dec. 9 (usually addressed by the chief judge or the chief judge pro tem of the Wayne County Circuit Court; but, on occasion, by Justice Mary Beth Kelly of the Michigan Supreme Court – an NLS graduate). Attorneys also receive a word-searchable CD with form pleadings and memoranda expanding on the speakers’ topics.

Reservation checks should be made payable to the FBA E.D. Mich., and mailed to New Lawyers Seminar c/o FBA Executive Director, PO Box 20759, Ferndale MI 48220. For more information, email the FBA at fbamich@fbamich.org or call Brian Figot at (248) 594-5950.

There also will be a ceremony admitting attorneys to practice in federal court coordinated with this program on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at approximately 3:45 p.m. in the U.S. Courthouse for all those who have been admitted to the state bar and meet requirements for admission to the bar of the District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.  This is a separate ceremony which is processed by the United States District Court Clerk’s Office (313-234-5005) with a separate admission fee of $226 payable to the Clerk, United States District Court.

Gov. Snyder signs act protecting hosts of equine activities

Governor Rick last month today signed PA 87 of 2015, the Michigan Equine Liability Act, effectively protecting those hosting equine activities from law suits if an accident occurs, unless there is willful neglect. Until this Act, a riding stable, racetrack, park, or horse farm owner was liable even for natural occurrences that could cause an accident, such as downed trees, a rodent hole or bee’s nest.

The act is retroactive to September 21, 2015, and now provides more protection for 35,000 Michigan Equine Partnership (MEP) members and equine operations in Michigan.

Michigan horse people have $4.35 billion equine related assets, and the economy sees about $460 million in equine related expenditures annually, with approximately $150 million generated in annual income from 155,000 horses.
