Murder charge filed against Detroit dog owner in boy’s death

DETROIT (AP) — Second-degree murder and other charges have been filed against the owner of four dogs that killed a 4-year-old Detroit boy.

Separately, a civil lawsuit has been filed by the parents of Xavier Strickland, who was snatched from his mother and killed by pit bulls while they walked in their neighborhood last Wednesday.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 41-year-old Geneke Lyons has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and possessing dangerous dogs causing death.

Lyons is due in court Monday. He's in custody and unavailable for comment. No lawyer has been assigned who can speak on Lyons' behalf.

Three dogs in the attack were killed by police and a fourth was seized and euthanized.

Law enforcement, youth kick off ‘Hugs, Not Bullets’ effort

DETROIT (AP) — Youth in Detroit and law enforcement officials are kicking off an effort to encourage people to safely ring in the New Year.

Leaders from the Neighborhood Service Organization’s Youth Initiatives Project on Monday plan to gather to help start the 12th annual “Hugs, Not Bullets” campaign, which aims to reduce celebratory gunfire and year-round gun violence in the Detroit area.

In addition to students and police, government officials also will be on hand.

Some people fire guns into the air to celebrate the arrival of the New Year, a tradition that police and others warn against.

Those involved in the safety campaign also hope to encourage gun owners to keep firearms locked up and unloaded to help prevent children from being injured or killed.
