Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library announces Facebook page

The Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library is pleased to announce the creation of a new Facebook page to promote awareness of its collections and services. Oakland County Library Board Chairman John Chambers states, “Access to the Law Library is no longer based solely on its brick and mortar space. Our Facebook presence creates a dynamic, collaborative engagement with our virtual legal community—without it, the Library doesn’t fully exist.”

The Law Library’s Facebook page provides an avenue for legal practitioners to stay current on Law Library resources, services, and events, as well as review interesting posts and shares. The Law Library also looks forward to receiving outside comments and shared content from its Facebook page followers.

Visit the new Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library Facebook page soon, and please be sure to “Like Us.” You may also continue to use the website, https://www.oakgov.com/libraries for Law Library information.

High court publishes proposed standards for appointed counsel

The Michigan Supreme Court on Tuesday published for comment the first set of proposed standards for appointed counsel. As required by PA 93 of 2013, the standards were developed by the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) and submitted to the Court for review.  Public comment on the proposed standards will be received until May 1, 2016, and will be considered at a public hearing currently scheduled for May 18, 2016.

In a letter transmitting the proposed standards, MIDC Chair James Fisher noted:

“These initial standards tackle some of the major problems Michigan faces in the delivery of adequate indigent defense systems: training and education of counsel, the initial client interview, use of investigation and experts, and counsel at first appearance and other stages.”

With submission of the proposed standards, the Court is providing an opportunity for public comment just as it would with any other proposed rule.

Public comments and the comments of others will be posted under the chapter affected by this proposal here. An introduction to the standards, the proposed standards, and Chair Fisher’s submission letter are also posted on that page.

Online comments regarding the first set of proposed standards should be submitted to ADMcomment@courts.mi.gov. To comment using U.S. mail, please write to: Office of Administrative Counsel, PO Box 30052, Lansing, MI 48909.
