Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Louis Gabel returns to Jones Day
The global law firm Jones Day has announced that Louis P. Gabel has joined the firm’s Detroit office as of counsel in its Business & Tort Litigation Practice.
Gabel returns to Jones Day from the United States Attorney’s Office in Detroit, where he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the White Collar Crime Unit, a position he served in since 2008. During his tenure with the Department of Justice, Gabel was also selected to serve as the Resident Legal Advisor in the United States Embassy in Bangladesh.

As a federal prosecutor, Gabel led investigations into one of the largest securities fraud cases in Michigan’s history and corruption within the Detroit Police Department. He also tried cases involving federal racketeering (RICO), bank fraud, mortgage fraud, and money laundering. Gabel’s recent work includes a trial in which he successfully convicted the leaders of the largest heroin and cocaine trafficking organization in Michigan, and a former state representative who helped launder money for the organization.
In 2012 and 2013, Gabel served as the Resident Legal Advisor in the United States Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As a diplomat, he was part of the ambassador’s trusted team of advisors. Gabel also regularly met with cabinet-level officials to provide assistance in combating terrorism and revising the laws of Bangladesh to bring them into compliance with international norms. Gabel has also trained judges, prosecutors, and investigators from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, Brazil, and Kenya.

Before joining the Department of Justice, Gabel was an associate in Jones Day’s Washington, DC office, after serving as a clerk for the Honorable Robert H. Cleland of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan.
Gabel earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from John Carroll University and his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.
Legal Aid and Defender to hold free outreach clinic in Detroit
Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) will conduct a free outreach clinic on civil legal services for income-eligible residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, including the city of Detroit, Wednesday, Feb. 18 from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Don Bosco Hall, 19321 W. Chicago St. Registration begins at 10 a.m., and space is limited.
