WCFLBA to meet Feb. 18 to discuss Uniform Collaborative Law Act
The Wayne County Family Law Bar association will host Randy Pitler, chair elect of the Collaborative Practice Institute of Michigan Feb. 18 at Checker Bar and Grill, 124 Cadillac Square in Detroit. Attendees will learn abou the Uniform Collaborative Law Act and how they can get involved in the Collaborative Law Movement. The meeting begins at 5 p.m.
Michigan Senate approves bill to ban fully-nude bars
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan would strip state liquor licenses from bars offering fully-nude entertainment under a bill passed by the state Senate.
The bill approved Wednesday is sponsored by Republican Senator Rick Jones of Grand Ledge and wouldn’t affect liquor licenses for topless bars.
Jones says the bill is intended to protect nude dancers and suggested that they’re in greater danger in fully-nude bars. He says the legislation also is needed to make sure Michigan remains a tourism-friendly state.
Jones says two Michigan bars have had fully-nude dancers, but he says other bars are trying to do the same.
Ten Democrats voted against the Senate bill. The House has not yet voted on the legislation.
Former Tigers pitcher loses bid for new trial in contract case
HOWELL, Mich. (AP) — A judge has rejected a request by ex-Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain for a new trial in a breach-of-contract case.
The Livingston Daily Press & Argus reports McLain's lawyer Barry Powers sought a new trial, saying McLain couldn't attend the trial due to a foot injury.
Livingston County Judge Theresa Brennan said Tuesday, however, a note about the injury that Powers provided at trial didn't indicate it was from a doctor's office.
McLain last year was ordered to pay Joe Dobson $1,910 in wages for a 2014 trade-show marketing sales job. Afterward, McLain and Powers also were ordered to pay about $7,000 in attorney fees.
McLain won the 1968 American League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards after winning 31 games and leading Detroit to the World Series.
