Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library to use Fastcase Database
The Adams-Pratt Oakland County Law Library has acquired a subscription to the Fastcase legal research database. Attorneys and members of the public now have free access to this new research tool on any computer at the library.
The Fastcase database is the quickest growing product of its kind in the legal research market today, according to the library’s press release. Through its unique sorting technology and analytics, the most authoritative cases are brought to the “top of the list” in online search results. The database also simultaneously reports how often those top-listed cases were cited. Fastcase’s visual mapping also enables researchers to target—at a glance—the most important cases for their needs. Content covers primary law from all 50 states, as well as comprehensive federal coverage from the 1880s to the present.
“The law library is very excited to be able to add Fastcase to its menu of databases,” said Laura Mancini, director of library services. “The law library is always looking to enhance its research offerings for the legal community and Fastcase’s mapping features make it distinctive from other legal research databases in the library’s collection. Attorneys and paralegals who wish to learn how to use this new product should not hesitate to contact library staff for training assistance.”

3 charged with murder in death of 13-year-old
DETROIT (AP) — Three people were charged Thursday in the death of a 13-year-old Detroit boy, who prosecutors say was beaten and choked and whose body was dumped in a vacant lot after he picked up about $70 that had been dropped outside of a convenience store.
“There’s not a whole lot that shocks seasoned prosecutors, but there are some things you just cannot explain,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said at a news conference, where she announced the charges.
Gregory Walker, 45; Lillian Roberts, 43; and 26-year-old Earnest Coleman face charges of murder, unlawful imprisonment, kidnapping, torture and gun crime. Walker is accused of choking Deontae Mitchell to death with help from Roberts and Coleman.
Prosecutors say Deontae and a friend, who was described by police as a cousin, were riding bikes on the east side of Detroit late on May 31, and the cousin told police that Deontae picked up some money dropped by one of the men now charged outside of a market.
Deontae rode away, Worthy said, and surveillance video shows Deontae being pursued by a man, who grabbed his arm and forced him into a car.
Deontae’s body was found a week ago in a vacant lot in Detroit. His death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the three people charged had attorneys in this case. A fourth person had been arrested last week, but Worthy said Thursday that only three are charged.
