VRH golf outing June 27 raises funds for returning veterans

Vets Returning Home (VRH) held its annual golf outing on June 27 at Wabeek Country Club. VRH, recognized as one of the best veteran programs in the state, has housed more than 400 veterans in the three years it has been in existence. The organization is fully staffed by dedicated volunteers and receives absolutely no funding from the government.

Sandy Bower, founder of VRH, commented that it was a “special honor” to have VRH be the charity chosen by the Tiger alumni to benefit from their annual golf outing.  Bower stated that it “was so humbling to see the Tiger alumni coming together in support of the veterans who need so much.”  A special guest at the outing was L. Brooks Patterson, Oakland County executive.  Garth Wooten, director of Veterans Affairs for Oakland County, and other county personnel also were there in support of VRH.

A strong supporter of VRH and a U.S. Army veteran himself, retired Circuit Court Judge Fred M. Mester, was “thrilled to see the Tiger alumni come from all parts of the country to support VRH.”  Alumni
in attendance included Jack Morris, Al Kaline, Lou Whitaker, Mickey Stanley, Mickey Lolich, Mike Henneman, and many more.

“The event was filled to capacity and a wonderful day was had by all in attendance,” said Mester.

Ex-Detroit councilman Pugh in court in sex case involving teen

DETROIT (AP) — The former president of the Detroit City Council has appeared in court on charges of criminal sexual conduct involving a teenager.

A magistrate entered a not-guilty plea on Charles Pugh's behalf and set bond at $500,000. He appeared in a Detroit court via video from jail and didn't have an attorney present.

Prosecutors had asked that Pugh be held without bond Tuesday, noting that he now lives in New York and could flee.

Prosecutors say he engaged in sexual behavior with a 14-year-old boy in 2003 and 2004 when Pugh worked at Detroit TV station WJBK.

Pugh was elected to the Detroit City Council in 2009, but he abruptly quit in 2013. A jury last year awarded $250,000 to a young man who had accused Pugh of sexual harassment.
