Scholar to speak at labor law symposium Oct. 13 at Wayne Law


Kate Bronfenbrenner, director of labor education research at Cornell University, will deliver the keynote address during the Bernard Gottfried Memorial Labor Law Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 13, at Wayne State University Law School.

Alumni, students and anyone interested in furthering their insight into labor law are invited to attend the symposium from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St.

Bronfenbrenner teaches and researches on union and employer strategies in organizing and bargaining in the global economy. She is a leading authority on successful strategies in labor union organizing and on the effects of outsourcing and offshoring on workers and worker rights. Prior to joining the Cornell faculty in 1993, Bronfenbrenner was an assistant professor in labor studies at Penn State University and worked for many years as an organizer and union representative with the United Woodcutters Association in Mississippi and with the Service Employees International Union in Boston. She also served as a welfare rights organizer in Seattle.

She earned her undergraduate degree and doctorate from Cornell University.

The symposium, in its 24th year, is sponsored by Wayne Law, National Labor Relations Board Region 7 and the State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Law Section.

The symposium will include these sessions:

• “What’s The Gig? Defining Employment in the On-Demand Economy”

• “Member Only Units: Free Rider v. Freedom of Association”

• “R You Experienced? Representation Case Procedures, Practices, and Pitfalls”

The registration fee for the symposium is $100, which includes all sessions, presentation materials, breakfast and lunch Students, NLRB staff and government employees can register for a reduced cost of $35. University of Detroit Mercy School of Law reception at the State Bar Annual Meeting
Dean Phyllis L. Crocker will host a cocktail reception for Detroit Mercy Law alumni, State Bar dignitaries, members of the judiciary, faculty, and students at the Annual Meeting of the State Bar of Michigan at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The reception will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
