Justices to referee state’s uncashed money orders dispute
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has agreed to referee a dispute between Delaware and 23 states over more than $150 million in uncashed money orders.
The justices on Monday stepped into the dispute involving uncashed money orders from Dallas-based MoneyGram, which has been submitting unclaimed money to Delaware.
The other states say the MoneyGram checks should be sent back to the state of purchase.
MoneyGram is incorporated in Delaware, as are many other publicly traded companies in the U.S. Delaware says state law requires that MoneyGram send unclaimed property to the company's state of incorporation instead of the state of origin.
Abandoned property is a major source of general fund revenue for Delaware.
The lawsuit was filed in the Supreme Court, which has the authority to rule on suits between states.
The other states are: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Browning to receive honor for national conference coordination
Charles W. Browning, Co-Chair of the Insurance Coverage Practice Group at Plunkett Cooney, will soon receive national recognition for coordinating a leading national bar conference.
The DRI — The Voice of the Defense Bar will present Browning with the Albert H. Parnell Outstanding Program Chair Award at a luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 20 during the 2016 DRI Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The award is presented annually to honor an individual who created a particularly dynamic educational program.
“This award was a complete surprise,” said Browning who chaired the DRI’s Insurance Coverage and Practice Symposium last December in New York City. “It was a challenging conference to coordinate with over 750 attendees, numerous presentations, meetings and other gatherings, but I enjoyed working with all of my colleagues and speakers. It turned out to be a great event.”
A member of the firm’s Board of Directors, Browning is known nationally for his experience and expertise in the area of insurance coverage and related litigation. He has the distinction of serving as coverage counsel for several leading property and casualty insurance companies, and he appears regularly in court to represent his clients throughout the country.
In addition to spearheading dynamic programs, Parnell honorees are selected based on how well they led and participated in the effective planning, marketing and presentation of educational programs.
