6 months in jail for woman who stole from baseball league
THREE OAKS, Mich. (AP) — The former treasurer of a baseball league in a small Michigan town has been sent to jail for stealing $37,000.
Meanwhile, the Three Oaks Baseball Association is holding bake sales and scrambling to raise money to buy uniforms for the next season.
Amanda Macias was sentenced to six months in jail Thursday in Berrien County.
Macias’s lawyer says she’s working two jobs to repay the league.
The Herald-Palladium says Adam Williams, president of the group, urged the judge to order the maximum sentence.
Cooley receives grants to prevent senior financial exploitation
WMU-Cooley Law School’s Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic was recently awarded nearly $54,000 in grants to prevent the financial exploitation of senior citizens in the Ingham County and surrounding areas.
The clinic received $33,000 from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging and Adult Services Agency PREVNT Initiative. The Capital Region Community Foundation awarded $10,950, and the Ingham County Regional Community Trust granted and additional $10,000 toward the initiative.
“It is all too common that we hear of senior citizens getting scammed out of much of their life savings by individuals who prey solely on the elderly,” said Kimberly O’Leary, WMU-Cooley professor and director of the Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic. “Through the work of Sixty Plus and its law students, the grants will help create awareness of this issue and assist in the prevention of the elderly being victimized.”
WMU-Cooley’s Sixty Plus, Inc., Elderlaw Clinic provides legal help to persons 60 years of age or older primarily in Ingham, Eaton or Clinton county. There are no income guidelines for this program, however the clinic does give priority to individuals with the greatest social and economic need. The non-profit clinic has been helping the aging in Eaton, Ingham and Clinton Counties for over 30 years.
Holiday Hours
The 36th District Court will be closed for the holidays Friday, Dec. 23 through Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Friday, Dec. 30 through Monday, Jan. 2, 2017. All probable cause conferences and preliminary examinations for felony cases will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice on the 2nd floor Dec. 27-29. Felony arraignments will be held at noon at the 36th District Court Dec. 27-29.
All other in-custody misdemeanors will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 28-29.
The Third Circuit Court Civil, Criminal and Family Divisions will be closed Friday, Dec. 23 through Friday, Dec. 30.
During the three days between Christmas and the New Year’s Eve holiday, the Criminal Division will be staffed to handle arraignments and bench warrants. The Civil Division will be staffed to handle emergency matters. The Family Division will be staffed to process emergency juvenile intake matters, emergency domestic relations and personal protection matters. The County Clerk’s Office will be staffed to accept civil and domestic relations pleadings and new case filings.
