Detroit Bar Association and Wayne County Third Circuit Court to celebrate Law Day on May 10

Law Day is a nationwide celebration of the rule of law, in recognition of how law and the legal process contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. For the third consecutive year, the Detroit Bar Association and the Wayne County Third Circuit Court, led by Chief Judge Robert Colombo, are celebrating Law Day with Detroit high school students from over a dozen public, private and charter schools.

The Law Day program presents a unique opportunity for students to interact with judges and attorneys and learn more about legal careers. Students will be participating in an essay contest, scholarship contest, mock oral arguments before Wayne County Circuit Court judges, and mentoring with the judges and attorney volunteers to learn more about legal careers. This year's keynote speaker, Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget M. McCormack, will address the students with the hope of further sparking their interest in pursuing a career in the legal field.

Attorney volunteers are essential to making Law Day a success. We need approximately 50 attorney volunteers from 8:00 am-1:30 pm on May 10, 2017 to assist students in presenting mock oral arguments before various Wayne County Circuit Court judges, and participating in lunch discussions about legal careers. Materials and case summaries will be provided to volunteers in advance.  Attorney volunteers are also needed to review and score essays submitted through the essay contest prior to Law Day.

Any attorneys interested in volunteering can contact Bridget Hathaway at bhathaway@bodmanlaw.com or 313-580-9253 or Sarah Gale-Barbantini at sarah.gale-barbantini@meemic.com or 248-276-2933.

Lakeshore Bar Association  to host program on abusive debt collection practices

Companies that buy debt for the purpose of suing to collect the debt rank as the single largest classification of litigants in Michigan. Thousands of debt collection lawsuits are filed in Michigan each year.

Unfortunately, too many debt collectors engage in harassing and abusive practices. Helping clients avoid that harassment and abuse and guiding them through the debt collection process to achieve the best possible outcome is the subject of a presentation by the Lakeshore Bar Association. The presenters are Sean R. O’Mara of the O’Mara Law Firm and David S. Parnell of the Parnell Law Firm. Both attorneys are experienced and highly regarded consumer advocates in the field of debt collection.

The program begins with food and beverages at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at City Kitchen restaurant, 16844 Kercheval in Grosse Pointe. The presentation begins at 6:30. The program is free for Lakeshore Bar Association members. The charge for non-members is $10.
