Trump declares disaster in Michigan counties after flooding
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — President Donald Trump has made a disaster declaration for four Michigan counties that sustained widespread damage amid severe storms and flash flooding in June.
The announcement Wednesday makes federal funding available to residents and business owners in Bay, Gladwin, Isabella and Midland counties for things such as temporary housing, repairs and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses. The assistance also will aid the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe within Isabella County.
Trump’s declaration also means communities statewide are eligible to participate in a program to help reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards.
Gov. Rick Snyder had asked Trump for the disaster declaration.
High court reinstates murder conviction in 1983 cold case
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court has reinstated the murder conviction of a man who was brought to trial about 30 years after a fatal stabbing in Highland Park.
The court released its opinion Tuesday, reversing the ruling of the state appeals court which threw out the conviction of William Lyles Jr.
Lyles is serving a life sentence. He was accused of stabbing Andrew Weathers in Highland Park back in 1983, but he wasn’t charged until 2012.
The appeals court threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial, saying Lyles didn’t get a fair trial because the judge failed to tell jurors that they could consider evidence of his peaceful character. The appeals court said it was “crucial to his defense.”
The Wayne County prosecutor appealed that ruling.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals recently issued an important decision on the Michigan assignment of rents statute and the impact and effect of a lender exercising its rights thereunder prior to the commencement of a bankruptcy petition. The holding is that a properly perfected assignment of rents enforced prior to the commencement of a bankruptcy excludes such rents from becoming property of the bankruptcy estate. This decision represents the first ruling by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on this issue, and resolves a split amongst the Eastern District and Western District Bankruptcy Courts.
