Snyder names Jonathan Tukel to Court of Appeals, 2nd District
Gov. Rick Snyder Monday announced the appointment of Jonathan Tukel to the Michigan Court of Appeals, 2nd District.
Tukel has been an Assistant United States Attorney with the Department of Justice since 1990, most recently serving as Chief of the National Security Unit supervising investigations and prosecutions with national security implications. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Tukel was an associate at Honigman Miller Schwartz & Cohn focusing on issues related to antitrust, labor, employment discrimination and wrongful termination, and white collar criminal defense.
Tukel is a member of the Federalist Society and the Security Committee of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. He has been a panelist on the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board since 1994 and a chair of the panel since 2000. He also teaches a criminal law-related course at the University of Michigan Law School.
In 2012, Tukel received both the Attorney General Award from the Department of Justice for “Excellence in Furthering the Interest in U.S. National Security” and the United States Attorney’s Award from the United States Attorney’s Office. He was also recognized by Michigan Lawyer’s Weekly as a Leader in the Law.
Tukel earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1982 and his law degree from University of Michigan Law School in 1988. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Henry Saad.
Tukel must seek election in November 2018 for a two-year term.
Bipartisan panel to analyze GOP tax plans today at Wayne Law
The Levin Center at Wayne Law will host a bipartisan panel of experts to analyze the pending GOP tax plans from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Wayne Law.
The event, “The GOP’s Tax Reform: A View from all Sides,” will feature Daniel M. Houlf, general tax counsel, General Motors Company; former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law and Wayne Law’s distinguished legislator in residence; and Wayne Law Distinguished Professor Alan S. Schenk. Moderating the discussion will be Wayne Law Professor Robert M. Ackerman.
This month, House and Senate Republicans in Washington released their respective tax proposals, stirring up controversy on both sides of the aisle.
Among the topics discussed will be the objectives of the proposals, treatment of corporations, elimination of certain taxes and deductions, and repatriation of offshore income.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be in Wayne Law’s Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium, 471 W. Palmer St., Detroit. Registration is required by emailing levincenter@wayne.edu.
