Kalamazoo man sentenced in slaying of elderly neighbor
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — A southwestern Michigan man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2013 beating death of his elderly neighbor has been sentenced to 15-20 years in prison.
The punishment handed down Monday for 45-year-old Todd Maneke of Kalamazoo followed a plea agreement last month.
Alfred Minka was found dead in August 2013 at his Kalamazoo apartment. Maneke was charged three years later. Forensics experts testified the 88-year-old Minka had been hit in the back of the head several times with a hammer or similar object.
Maneke was on trial in September, but a judge declared a mistrial because she learned several jurors had researched the case outside of what was presented in court. Maneke's new trial had been scheduled to start this month before the plea deal was reached.
Ex-Flint mayor ousted in water crisis seeks state House seat
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — The former mayor of Flint who was ousted by voters in 2015 amid the city's crisis with lead-tainted water is seeking a seat in the Michigan House. The Flint Journal reports that Democrat Dayne Walling announced his plans Monday. The Flint-area seat is opening up due to term limits. Two other people have formed campaign committees for the Michigan House seat: Lashaya Darisaw and John Cherry.
Lawyer Carl B. Bolden, Jr. dies, 84
Carl B. Bolden, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 25, 2018 at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Letitia for over 56 years. Loving father of Carl (Tanya) Bolden III and Lisa Bolden. Granddaughters, Carli and Taya.
A man of strong faith, Carl was an avid reader with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He loved vacationing with family, spending time with friends and cheering on his favorite football team, the Michigan Wolverines. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Carl earned a BA Degree in Business Administration from the Detroit Institute of Technology and a law degree from Detroit College of Law.
Carl started practicing law in 1968 and eventually formed his own law firm, Bolden and Blake, serving clients for more than 30 years. He was a member of several bar associations, a panelist on the Attorney Discipline Board, former president of Wright Mutual Insurance Co., past president of Detroit Institute of Commerce, board member and legal counsel of the Booker T. Washington Business Association, board member Greater Woodward CDC and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 2 from 3-8PM at McFall Brothers Funeral Home, 9419 Dexter, Detroit. Celebration of Life on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11AM (10AM Family Hour) at St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, 8850 Woodward Detroit.
