The newly formed Arab-American Law Student Association (AALSA) at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will host its first event on April, 15 from 5–7 p.m. The group of first-year law students, along with second-year advisors, will welcome Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib.
The event titled “Arab-American Woman’s Rise to Congress” is a look into Tlaib’s road to Congress where she currently represents the 13th District of Michigan. In 2008, she became the first Muslim woman to serve in the Michigan Legislature. The student group says that Tlaib will share her personal story and deliver a speech encouraging all minorities alike.
According to the AALSA mission statement, the student organization is committed to supporting individuals from all cultural backgrounds while promoting Arab-American culture and heritage, thus adding to the diversity of the campus, as well as increasing Arab-American representation throughout the legal community.
Ali Berro, the organization’s secretary, said, “There’s no better way to represent our mission statement than to host Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. She has blazed a path for Arab-American women and inspired all of us to be leaders and work to make an impact on our community.”
“For our first event, we really wanted it to be unforgettable. We needed someone that not only would motivate us students, but a whole legal community and beyond,” said AALSA’s President Nicole Miller.
Amer Zahr, an international comedian, writer, political activist and adjunct professor at Detroit Mercy Law, will be the master of ceremonies. Zahr is also an advisor to the organization.
Congresswoman Tlaib will begin her speech shortly after opening statements, concluding with answering questions from guests. Food and beverages will be provided.
The event takes place at the University’s Riverfront Campus located at 651 East Jefferson Ave. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Guests can register at https://aalsa.eventbrite.com.
