The Asian Pacific American Law Students Association at WMU-Cooley’s Lansing campus hosted Diplomat in Residence Lou Fintor on June 5, 2019. Fintor spoke with law students about careers with the U.S. State Department Foreign Service Office, both in the Civil Service, serving at home, and in the Foreign Service Office, serving abroad.
During his presentation, Fintor shared that Foreign Service specialists can work in areas of security, financial management, office management, construction and facility management, and others. He explained that individuals must be strong subject matter experts in the specific areas of interest and must have a strong resume supporting their skills. Applicants being considered will need to participate in a specialized oral assessment.
“Working for the State Department offers many benefits, including competitive compensation, intensive language training, international travel, and fulfilling work supporting the mission of the United States,” said Fintor.
Joining the Foreign Service in 2002, Fintor served as U.S. Embassy spokesperson in the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe. As Diplomat in Residence, Fintor’s role includes sharing information on State Department opportunities to students and professionals located throughout the North Central Diplomat in Residence region.
