Secretary of State offices to close for Independence Day

All Secretary of State offices and the Office of the Great Seal will be closed in observance of Independence Day on Thursday, July 4.

Most license plate types can be ordered or renewed online at ExpressSOS.com. Drivers license permits and registrations for vehicles, motorcycles, snowmobiles or boats may be printed, allowing motorists to drive legally until they get their renewed drivers license or plate and tab in the mail. Additionally, customers may order a duplicate registration or title, change their address and register to be an organ donor on the website.

The Department of State mails notices to motorists 45 days before their drivers license or license plates expire to give them ample time to renew. Licenses and plates that expire on a day when state offices are closed, such as a holiday or weekend, can be renewed the following day without penalty.

License plate tabs also can be renewed at self-service kiosks, many of which are available around the clock. Visit the Branch Office Locator at Michigan.gov/SOS to find a Secretary of State kiosk near you.

With the exception of holidays, offices are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Smaller offices may close for the lunch hour. On Wednesdays, most offices are open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with those in city centers open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some branch offices have extended hours Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a few offer Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to noon. Check the Branch Office Locator at Michigan.gov/SOS for complete hours and services.

Man arrested in death of homeless camper

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A young man is in custody in Traverse City in the slaying of a homeless man whose body was found by hikers in late May.

Police say 18-year-old Joshua Vandehoef turned himself in early Wednesday through an arrangement with prosecutors. He's charged with murder in the death of 62-year-old James Chisholm , whose throat was slashed.

It wasn't immediately known if he has a lawyer who could comment on the allegations.

Chisholm's body was found by hikers on May 29, about 15 yards (13 meters) from Boardman Lake. He had been living in a tent. Police believe he had been in the area about three weeks.

Police say they searched properties in the Traverse City area and in Sacramento County, California, as part of the investigation.
