On July 17, WMU-Cooley Law School President and Dean James McGrath addressed law students during the Lansing campus' Honors Convocation. The ceremony recognizes law students for outstanding academic achievement, professionalism and leadership roles with various student organizations.
McGrath praised the law students for their commitment to excellence and service to others.
"It is clear our students are community-minded and hardworking," said McGrath.
Helen Datkovic, Serah Waweru, and husband and wife students Terry and Christine Doxey were presented with the Leadership Achievement Award. The award acknowledges students who have consistently, comprehensively and effectively provided leadership in a variety of capacities.
Datkovic, originally from Sturgis, Mich., is a graduate of Ferris State University. While at WMU-Cooley, she has earned first place in the Intra-School Mock Trial Competition and has been a member of the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, Organization of Women Law Students, the Environmental Law Society, and the Order of Graduation Marshals.
Christine Doxey, who earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Davenport University, is originally from Battle Creek, Mich. She has served as a member on the Sports and Entertainment Law Society, Order of Graduation Marshals, Student Bar Association, Cooley Volunteer Corps, Black Law Students Association, Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Additionally, Christine worked as a graduate assistant in the Office of Student Assistance for Honor Code Violations and as a teaching assistant for Mediation, Advanced Mediation and Summer Skills courses.
Terry Doxey was presented the Leadership Achievement Award for his involvement with multiple student organizations, including: Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society, Mock Trial, Sports and Entertainment Law Society, Black Law Students Association, WMU-Cooley Ambassador program, and the Order of Graduation Marshals. Terry is from Kalamazoo, Mich. and earned his bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University.
Waweru, is from Nairobi, Kenya, and earned a bachelor's degree from Murray State University. In addition to the Leadership Achievement Award, Waweru was presented with the Student Bar Association Distinguished Student Award. She has been an active member of the Student Bar Association, Black Law Students Association, Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, Christian Legal Society, Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society, and the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. Additionally Waweru has volunteered with Cooley for Kids and as a Graduation Marshal.
