Gerry Brisson, president and CEO of Gleaners Community Food Bank, will receive the Eleanor Josaitis Unsung Hero Award for his more than 20 years of dedicated service to improve food security, advocate for the community’s most vulnerable residents, and seek holistic solutions to providing hunger relief.

Danielle North, vice president, external relations of Promise Schools; and founder/owner of Kidz Kingdom, will receive the Dave Bing Future Leader Award for her work to advocate for children, education, racial equity, and women’s issues. She is a high-energy doer and an inspiration to others.

“This year’s award winners stand out among a strong group of candidates,” said Thom Linn, chairman emeritus and attorney with Miller Canfield and also immediate past chair of the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition and co-chair of the Shining Light Awards program. “They are selfless leaders who are breaking down barriers, creating opportunity, and helping to build a stronger region.”

“It is a special honor to salute these exceptional leaders,” added Peter Bhatia, Detroit Free Press editor and vice president, and Shining Light Awards co-chair. “They are making significant contributions and improving the quality of life across Southeast Michigan.”

The Detroit Free Press and Metropolitan Affairs Coalition launched the Shining Light Awards in 2007 to highlight the critical importance of regional leadership and cooperation to the success of Southeast Michigan. The awards are named in memory of the late Neal Shine, former Detroit Free Press editor and publisher, and honor his legacy of dedication and commitment to the Greater Detroit community.
