Honigman LLP now has five practice groups with the highest ranking of Band 1 in the 2020 edition of Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers in Business, which is more than any other law firm in Michigan.

New this year, Chambers elevated Honigman's Bankruptcy/Restructuring practice to Band 1. In all, the prestigious directory of leading U.S. business law firms and lawyers bestowed the highest Band 1 ranking on the following Honigman practices in Michigan:

Honigman continues to be the only law firm in Michigan to garner the top ranking of Band 1 in three practice areas, including Corporate/M&A, Intellectual Property, and Real Estate.

Chambers USA reported that Honigman's Band 1 Corporate/M&A practice is known for its "standout bench of corporate attorneys handling high-value sales and acquisitions for a range of prominent domestic companies." It was also noted that Honigman has a "vibrant private equity practice" and offers "further expertise in venture capital work" and is "well placed to advise on securities issuances and matters of corporate governance." A client stated that Honigman is "not just an automotive industry powerhouse, but can handle the breadth of issues arising at a global publicly traded company."

For Honigman's Band 1 Intellectual Property practice, Chambers USA reported the team is known as a "market-leading practice offering the full range of copyright, patent and trademark services" with "particular expertise regarding IP issues in the life sciences and high-tech sectors." It was also noted that Honigman "acts for an impressive list of clients, including numerous household-name brands." For Honigman's Band 1 Litigation: General Commercial practice, Chambers USA stated Honigman is known as an "outstanding criminal and civil litigation practice with broad-ranging expertise across several significant industries, including automotive, consumer products and healthcare." It was also noted that "the team has a broad range of expertise, acting for clients on class actions, IP, private equity and securities litigation, both in the first instance and at the appellate level."

The survey also reported that Honigman's Band 1 Real Estate practice is "stellar" and "known for the depth of its expertise across the full spectrum of real estate matters, including complex development financings for commercial and residential properties." It noted that Honigman "acts for clients in the environmental, hospitality, retail and affordable housing sectors, among others."

For the newly-elevated Band 1 Bankruptcy/Restructuring practice, Chambers reported that Honigman is known as a "highly regarded team consistently highlighted as a leading player in the Michigan bankruptcy arena. Especially noted for representing debtor companies from the automotive and manufacturing industries."

Attorneys Heather Cude and Krystal D. Hermiz recently joined the Transportation Law Practice Group of Plunkett Cooney.

A member of the firm's Detroit office, Cude focuses her practice on the defense of first- and third-party auto liability on behalf of national insurance companies and their policyholders. Additionally, she has experience handling personal injury cases that involve trucking liability, bus liability, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents, slip and fall accidents, pet attacks and claims of alleged police misconduct.

Cude received her law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 2015. While in law school, she interned for U.S. Distrcit Court Judge Gerald E. Rosen, Eastern District of Michigan, and the Wayne County Corporation Counsel. Cude received her undergraduate degree from Grand Valley State University in 2013.

Hermiz, who is a member of the firm's Bloomfield Hills office, focuses her practice in the areas of first- and third-party motor vehicle negligence. She represents insurers, corporations and individuals in a variety of automotive liability matters, including cases involving complex legal and factual issues such as coverage, fraud and rescission, and uninsured/underinsured motorist benefits, as well as claims involving premises liability.

Selected a "Rising Star" by Michigan Super Lawyers magazine since 2013, Hermiz is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Oakland County Bar Association, and the Chaldean American Bar Association for which she is a past president.

Admitted to practice in the state and federal courts in Michigan, Hermiz is a 2008 graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a 2004 graduate of the University of Michigan.

His practice also includes the representation of healthcare organizations and professionals in medical malpractice and general liability actions. Cortez also has experience with cannabis law, contract disputes, commercial litigation, constitutional law, claims under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), and criminal matters.

Ben Fruchey

Fruchey has a M.S. in Geology and prior work experience includes offshore oil and gas exploration and environmental consulting. His litigation practice focuses on the defense of environmental, toxic tort, mass tort, class action and products liability litigation. He also assists clients with defending against environmental regulatory enforcement actions. Fruchey assists clients with various compliance issues (such as those surrounding COVID-19) and helps them develop plans to meet applicable state and federal guidelines.

Mitchell Jackson

Jackson has experience handling a variety of complex litigation cases, including medical malpractice, professional liability, general liability, third-party auto, and commercial litigation. He has experience handling trial and appellate matters in state and federal courts.

Anthony Pignotti

Pignotti devotes the majority of his practice to civil litigation, including the defense of health care professionals, corporations, and hospital systems in complex medical malpractice and birth trauma litigation. He has trial experience and has obtained verdicts of no cause for action on behalf of his clients in both federal and state courts.

Saulius Polteraitis

Polteraitis primary focus is representing hospitals and health professionals in the defense of complex medical malpractice and products liability claims. In addition, he represents clients in general negligence, employment and premises liability matters.

Sarah Tupica Berard

Berard's practice focuses on defending health care organizations and professionals in complex medical malpractice litigation. Berard has experience in all areas of medical malpractice, with a focus on cases involving emergency medicine, critical care, oncology, skin integrity and wound care, orthopedic and general surgery and claims against nursing and mid-level staff. Her experience includes alternative dispute resolution proceedings and all phases of litigation, including trial. In addition, she counsels and presents on the litigation process in Michigan, documentation best practices and deposition skills.
