Three Wayne State University Law School students were awarded scholarships from the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan Foundation.
Jordan Ewald won the WLAM Foundation Scholarship, Erin Gianopoulos won the General Motors Scholarship and Michelle Mayfield won the Dawn Van Hoek Scholarship.
WLAM awards scholarships based on the students’ demonstrated leadership capabilities; community service in such areas as family law, child advocacy or domestic violence; commitment to diversity; and potential for advancing the position of women in society.
Ewald, a rising third-year student, is a governor-at-large for Wayne Law’s Student Board of Governors, an assistant editor for the Wayne Law Review and a member of the Women’s Law Caucus. She is also a law clerk at Michigan Auto Law. Before starting law school, Ewald was a four-year starter and two-year captain on the University of Michigan-Dearborn’s women’s varsity softball team. In 2016, she was the sole female United States representative at the Federation of International University Sport’s Forum in Montpellier, France. At the forum, she collaborated with representatives from over 50 countries to research and present solutions for university sports reform to an international panel. Ewald holds a bachelor’s in journalism and communications.
Before law school, Gianopoulos spent eight years in active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, serving across the country and overseas. She retired from the reserves in 2018. The rising third-year student is enrolled in the joint J.D./M.A. program to earn a master’s in legal history. She is the incoming chancellor for Wayne Law’s Jessup International Law Moot Court team and a member of the Women’s Law Caucus. Outside of Law School, Gianopoulos is on the board of directors at Habitat for Humanity Detroit, where she leads the organization’s Veteran Build initiative and is a Michigan Political Leadership Program fellow. This summer, Gianopoulos will intern for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan. She holds a bachelor’s in history from the University of Michigan.
Mayfield is a rising second-year student who worked for elected officials at the state, national and international levels before starting at Wayne Law. She interned for Member of Parliament Wayne Marston in Ottawa, Canada, in 2014 and State Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker in Lansing in 2015. In 2016, Mayfield interned for U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow in Washington, D.C. Following her internship, she served as Sen. Stabenow’s staff assistant for three years. She is a member of the Black Law Students Association and the Wolverine Bar Association. This summer, she will hold a judicial internship position with Judge Arthur Tarnow of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Mayfield holds a bachelor’s in political science and communications from Western Michigan University.
