Governor Whitmer signs bipartisan bills


On Thursday, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4429, House Bill 4067 and House Bill 4053. 

“I welcome the opportunity to sign bipartisan legislation,” said Whitmer. “I am happy to sign House Bill 4067 to amend the Public Health Code to update the licensing process for specialized dentistry, and House Bill 4429 and House Bill 4053 to rename roads in memory of valued community members.”  

HB 4067 allows the Michigan Board of Dentistry to issue five specialty licenses, in addition to the seven specialty licenses it currently administers. Michigan will now issue licenses for all twelve nationally recognized dental specialties.

This bill was sponsored by Rep. Ben Frederick, R - Owosso. 

HB 4429 renames a portion of highway US-2 and highway US-41 between Hyde and Bark River as the “Darryl M. Rantanen Memorial Highway” in honor of a trooper who was killed when the patrol car he was riding in was forced off the roadway during a pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

This bill was sponsored by Rep. Beau LaFave, R - Iron Mountain.

HB 4053 renames a portion of highway M-120 between E. Bard Road and 4th Street as the “Deputy Ernest W. Heikkila Memorial Highway” In honor of a Muskegon County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed when his cruiser was broadsided en route to an accident call.

This bill was sponsored by Rep. Greg VanWoerkom, R - Norton Shores.

 

Bar associations, sorority present Virtual Educational Forum II
 

The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association along with the Wolverine Bar Association, the  Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Project Clean Slate, and the Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Social Action Committee will present Virtual Educational Forum II: “Clearing the Record: Traffic Convictions & Multiple Felonies” online Tuesday, May 18, beginning from 6 to 7 p.m. via Zoom.

Attendees will get a clear understanding of Michigan’s new expungement laws on traffic convictions and multiple felonies that applicants can now have cleared from their criminal record.

Panelists will include Assistant Secretary of State Heaster Wheeler, State Rep. Tenisha Yancey, former State Rep. and DPSCD board member Sherry Gay-Dagnogo, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Regina Thomas, and attorney Stephanie LaBelle.

Free Food Giveaway event coordinated by bar associations
The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association and the Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan will present a Free Food Giveaway Community Event on Saturday, May 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Lathrup Village City Hall at 27400 Southfield Road. Straker and BWLAM volunteers who would like to help give out free fresh food boxes should be at Lathrup Village City Hall at noon.
