DBA’s Annual Meeting slated for June 23 at the Roostertail

The Detroit Bar Association dates back to 1836, a year made famous by the “Battle of the Alamo” in what would become the Lone Star State.
While there are no historical connections to what happened in Detroit and San Antonio back then, there will be some history made on Wednesday, June 23 when the DBA marks a milestone with its 185th Annual Meeting at an event to be staged at a Motor City jewel.
“Don’t miss your chance to be a part of Raising the Bar 2021, the Detroit Bar Association’s annual meeting – held at the iconic Roostertail in a new outdoor structure, observing all state safety measures and protocols,” said a spokesperson for the DBA.
“Join us for an evening of celebration and recognition, including the installation of Detroit Bar officers and awarding those who have shown exceptional dedication to the outreach and growth of the law, within both the Detroit Bar and community.”
The event will see the ceremonial “changing of the guard” for the DBA, as outgoing president Daniel Shirey of Valitutti & Sherbrook will welcome incoming president Robert Murkowski of Miller Canfield to the top of the Detroit Bar’s leadership ranks.
Also highlighting the Annual Meeting will be the traditional awards ceremony, during which a series of honors will be presented to a number of deserving honorees.
The 2021 Liberty Bell Award will be presented posthumously to the late Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, who died last December of complications from COVID-19.
Frances Yturri, a judicial attorney with the Wayne County Circuit Court, is this year’s recipient of the Pro Bono Service Award.
Valerie Newman, of the Conviction Integrity Unit of the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, will receive the Frank Murphy Award on June 23.
Attorney Christopher Webb, who heads a law firm and ADR practice bearing his name, will be presented with the coveted Detroit Bar President’s Award.
Committee of the Year Award recognition will be received by Kaitlyn Elias of Kitch; Caroline Jomaa of the Legal Aid and Defender Association; Carina Kraatz of Kitch; Morgan Schuyt of Fink Bressack; and Cara Swindlehurst of Wilson Gordon.
Tickets to the event, which will run from 5-8 p.m., cost $80 per person. The Roostertail is located at 100 Marquette Drive.
