ABA legal education section releases consultant’s report on study of GRE

The Council of the American Bar Association Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar is seeking comment on a just-released independent consultant report examining the 2018 study by the Educational Testing Service on the predictive value for law school applicants of its Graduate Requirement Examination (GRE).

Comments on the report, posted under General News on the section’s website at www.americanbar.org/groups/legal_education are due Sunday, October 31. The council, the governing body of the section which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as the national accrediting agency for programs leading to the J.D., will consider the report at its next meeting, scheduled for Nov. 18-20.

“The report will be reviewed by the council at its November meeting to determine future guidance to schools on the use of the GRE,” said Bill Adams, ABA managing director for Accreditation and Legal Education.

Adams said in 2020, 1.47% of the entering first-year class, or 549 applicants out of 38,233, were admitted with a GRE score.

Whitmer names new budget director, department leader

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday named a new state budget director and a new leader of the Department of Technology, Management and Budget.

Christopher Harkins, director of the nonpartisan Senate Fiscal Agency, will succeed budget director Dave Massaron — whose departure for a job at Wayne State University was previously announced. Massaron stayed on to finish the new budget, which the governor signed Wednesday.

Harkins worked in the budget office previously and was a policy and budget adviser for legislative Republicans for nearly a decade.

Whitmer appointed Julia Dale, who works in the state attorney general's office, as director of the Department of Technology, Management and Budget. She succeeds Brom Stibitz, who has led the department on a permanent or acting basis since 2020.
The governor also announced some staff changes.

Poppy Sias-Hernandez, chief equity and inclusion officer, also will lead the Office of Global Michigan. Deputy legal counsel Maria Martinez becomes chief compliance officer. Marc Rehmann is the new policy director after working as an aide to U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado.
