Detroit Discovery Ball announces one-of-a-kind auction and radiothon

The American Cancer Society (ACS) announces more details about their Detroit Discovery Ball on Friday, November 12. Featured at the event’s auction will be a 2021 Corvette Stingray, donated by Chevrolet and enhanced with artwork by Detroit artist Mike Han.

“The American Cancer Society is extremely fortunate to have a compassionate, corporate partner like Chevrolet,” says Chad Creekmore, ACS’s senior executive director. “The donation of the 2021 Corvette Stingray to the Detroit Discovery Ball is a testament to the brand’s continued and growing commitment to the ACS mission of saving lives, celebrating lives, and leading the fight for a world without cancer.”

The auction and the Detroit Discovery Ball will raise funds for life-saving cancer research, advocacy, patient programs and services. “This is truly a win for everyone, as all proceeds from the auction of this vehicle will go directly to the Michigan Cancer Research Fund, supporting the work of researchers right here in our own state,” Creekmore adds.

Adding yet another level of excitement and underscoring the fact that this event celebrates the local community, Detroit artist Mike Han is creating a special wrap for the 2021 Corvette Stingray. The Korean-Detroit artist, designer, and self-proclaimed modern vandal is influenced by Korean calligraphy, graffiti, and modern design. “My mother’s family immigrated into Detroit’s Cass Corridor in the early 70’s because my grandmother had breast cancer in Korea and was told they couldn’t treat her if the cancer returned. My mother survived breast cancer twice, and has volunteered with ACS because of her experiences,” says Han. “This project is deeply personal to me, and it’s a great honor to help support ACS with my art.”

The wrap is detachable and is designed specifically for the car. Bidders from across the country can participate in advance of the event by submitting a bid online. The auction will open Monday, November 8, for bidding. All bids will be considered during the live event.

The American Cancer Society also will be the beneficiary of a radiothon next month in partnership with Beasley Media. The radiothon will be live November 4 on The Praise Network. The radiothon is a new opportunity in addition to the November 12 event for community members to support the work of ACS and its researchers.
