University of Detroit Mercy School of Law hosted the second installment of the Current Events in the Law series on Monday, November 1, via Zoom. This installment, titled “President Biden’s Climate Change Agenda,” was hosted in collaboration with Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES) and funded by the Dewitt C. Holbrook Memorial Fund.
Nicholas Schroeck, associate dean of Experiential Education and associate professor of law at Detroit Mercy Law, was the moderator for the event. The panelists were Michael B. Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice and director of the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School; and Jamesa Johnson Greer, Climate Justice director at the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition.
Schroeck recognized the importance of caring for the environment in the Mercy and Jesuit traditions that are the foundation of Detroit Mercy Law’s mission.
Gerrard discussed a historical perspective on environmental standards in the United States. He explored how the history of environmental legislation has influenced President Biden’s environmental policy.
Johnson Greer discussed the local efforts in Detroit to combat climate change and to advance climate justice among communities that are disproportionately affected by climate change. She explored the factors influencing differences in air quality across Michigan and the solutions that are being pursued to remedy the inequities in air quality.
Gerrard and Johnson Greer took questions at the end of the event from the audience.
