Law student graduates with 4.0 GPA

In December 2021, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School graduates of the Justice Horace Gray class were honored at their commencement ceremony in Lansing. Of the 92 graduates earning their juris doctor degrees, Mina Woodard ranked first with a perfect cumulative grade point average of 4.0 and was named summa cum laude.  Before attending WMU-Cooley, Woodard received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University in 2015.

While at WMU-Cooley, Woodard served as a student admissions counselor, associate editor for the WMU-Cooley Law Review, Student Bar Association senator, and as a teaching assistant for Constitutional Law and Wills Estates & Trusts. She earned certificates of merit for academic excellence in Research & Writing, Contracts I & II, Torts II, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure I, Property II, Evidence, Constitutional Law II, Business Organization, Taxation, Immigration Law, Secured Transactions, Products Liability, and Wills Estates & Trusts.

At WMU-Cooley, summa cum laude is bestowed on the student with the highest cumulative grade point average.  Since WMU-Cooley’s first graduating class in 1976, only 16 students have graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

“This is an outstanding achievement for Mina Woodard and I am honored to have had her as a teaching assistant,” said WMU-Cooley Constitutional Law Professor Michael C.H. McDaniel. “In addition to excellence in academics, she has displayed a high degree of leadership among her peers. She was willing to help students with their understanding of legal principles while at the same time being involved as a senior editor with the Law Review and as a member of the Student Bar Association.”

Woodard is employed at the Chalgian & Tripp Law Offices PLLC as a law clerk, where she hopes to stay on as an associate attorney after passing the Michigan bar exam. Chalgian and Tripp practices elder law, estate planning, probate litigation, and special needs planning with various locations across Michigan.
