Dawkins Davis nominated to U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit
U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters on Wednesday applauded President Biden’s nomination of Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Davis currently serves as a U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan. If confirmed, Davis would be the first African American woman from Michigan, and the second African American woman in history, to serve on the Sixth Circuit. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has appellate jurisdiction over the federal district courts in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.
“President Biden made the right choice—Judge Davis is an outstanding candidate to serve on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Her time at the Eastern District of Michigan has demonstrated her excellent work as a thoughtful and fair judge. I know she will continue this work on the Sixth Circuit, and I look forward to moving her nomination through the Senate confirmation process,” said Stabenow.
“Judge Davis is a highly qualified jurist who would bring a wealth of experience to the U.S. Circuit Court and I have full confidence in her ability to continue serving our state and nation well,” said Peters. “I applaud the historic nomination of Judge Davis and look forward to working alongside my colleagues to see to it that she is confirmed by the Senate.”
Davis has served as a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan since December 2019. She previously served as a magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan from 2016 to 2019. From 1997 to 2016, Davis served in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan as executive assistant United States attorney from 2010 to 2015 and as an assistant United States attorney from 1997 to 2010. During her tenure, she also served as deputy chief of the Controlled Substances Unit from 2007 to 2010.
Davis began her career as an associate at Dickinson Wright PLLC in Detroit from 1992 to 1997.
A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Davis received Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees in 1988 and 1989 respectively from the Wichita State University, and a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1992.
