Chief justice calls statewide judicial case management system a 'giant step forward

Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget M. McCormack issued the following statement  regarding a statewide judicial case management system
“With the Governor’s recommendation today (February 9) to fund a statewide judicial case management system, courts take a giant step forward toward a goal we have dreamed about for generations. By connecting courts and creating a common platform to manage case files, data collection will be less time-consuming, more accurate, and available in real time to generate reports and drive decision-making. By working together on one system, waste and duplication of efforts will be eliminated and courts will be more efficient.

“The Trial Court Funding Commission noted in its final report: ‘In a data-driven world, a common data collection point is vital for service improvement.’

And we learned from the Jails Task Force that statewide data is critically important to developing common sense innovations to make our criminal justice system more effective, more equitable, and more focused on safety. By replacing 20 different and disconnected systems with one statewide
system, the improvement in service to the public will be dramatic.

“For too long, Michigan courts have struggled with cumbersome workarounds and technical barriers to innovation. From text message notifications to electronic docket boards to the latest innovations in justice administration and customer service, courts will put this funding to work for a smarter, safer Michigan. I look forward to working with the state legislature as they study this landmark investment in technology to help our judiciary become more effective and efficient.”
