'Toxicology Training for Prosecutors' offered online

The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) will present “Toxicology Training for Prosecutors” online Wednesday, March 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. via Zoom

Showing that a driver had a specific substance in his or her blood is an element prosecutors must prove in all operating while intoxicated cases. Understanding toxicology results and what a forensic scientist can testify to in court is important for prosecutors handling these types of cases.

This half-day webinar will give prosecutors handling OWI cases a better understanding on what happens with a blood sample that is sent to the lab. Other topics include what a forensic scientist can testify to in a drugged driving case, what drugs are being tested for at the lab, and interpreting a lab report. The webinar will also include a Q & A session with the lab as well as a mock-trial session where prosecutors will have the opportunity to direct examine a forensic scientist on a mock lab report. The mock trials will be limited to the first 8 prosecutors who register.

To register for this training, prosecutors should visit www. michiganprosecutor.org and click on “training.” Upon approval, registrants will receive an email from Zoom containing instructions on how to join the training. The first 8 prosecutors to register will be sent an additional email regarding mock trial participation. The training handouts, if any, will be made available on the day of the training. The link to handouts will be provided upon registration.

Anyone with questions or in need any assistance registering for the webinar should contact Amy Gronowski at gronowskia @michigan.gov or at 517-643-2114.
