Attorney named to Appellate Defender Commission
JoAnn Lank, of Livonia, has been appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to the Michigan Appellate Defender Commission.
Lank is the district clerk for the Michigan Court of Appeals in Detroit. She holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Virginia and Juris Doctor degree from the University of Tulsa College of Law.
Lank is appointed to represent the Michigan Court of Appeals for a term commencing May 26, 2022 and expiring May 24, 2026. She succeeds Douglas Messing whose term expired May 24.
The Michigan Appellate Defender Commission is responsible for the development of a system of indigent appellate defense services which shall include services provided by the office of the state appellate defender and locally appointed private counsel. The Commission will be responsible for the development of minimum standards to which all indigent criminal defense appellate services shall conform and will compile and keep current a statewide roster of attorneys eligible for and willing to accept appointment by an appropriate court to serve as criminal appellate defense counsel for indigents.
Applications sought from candidates interested in federal court nomination
U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters are accepting applications from qualified persons interested in nomination for federal judge in the Eastern District of Michigan.
Interested candidates should request an application by emailing judicialnominations@stabenow.senate.gov.
The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14, . For those who previously applied during the application period that ended on March 9, their application will automatically be reconsidered.
“I am confident that there are many qualified people in our state who are ready to serve on the federal bench. I strongly encourage those interested in serving to apply,” said Stabenow.
It is the Senate’s tradition for both home state Senators to recommend judicial nominees to the President for consideration. After someone is nominated, it is Senate procedure for the home state senators to agree to consideration of a nominee before the Senate Judiciary Committee conducts hearings and votes. This is commonly called the “blue slip” process.
Nominations approved by the Committee are then considered by the full Senate.
Stabenow and Peters will continue to listen to public input and consult with Michigan’s legal community to ensure that the state is served by highly qualified, fair and impartial judges who put the people of Michigan first.
