Grand Rapids attorneys honored as Michigan Women in the Law
In addition to Mary Bauman, reported in the Aug. 27 issue of Grand Rapids Legal News, two other deserving local attorneys are part of the Michigan Women in the Law listing of Michigan Lawyers Weekly.
Elizabeth Bransdorfer of Mika Meyers Beckett and Jones, and Elizabeth Joy Fossel of Varnum were also part of the elite group of women, chosen based on the following criteria:
—Commitment to excellence in the practice of law;
—Inspiring and accomplished leadership in the profession;
—Successful mentorship of other women; and
—Significant contributions of time and effort to volunteerism and pro bono work.
Bransdorfer specializes in litigation, with a practice emphasis on domestic relations. She has completed collaborative law training and assists clients who are committed to settling their cases in ways that work for their particular families, rather than through the courts. She is a member of the Council of the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and of the Family Law Advisory Board of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. She is Chair of the Gerald R. Ford Chapter of the American Inns of Court and Chair of the ADR Section of the Grand Rapids Bar Association. She is also a past president of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (1994-95) and the National Association of Women Lawyers (2001-02).
Bransdorfer was named the 2009 recipient of the Michael S. Barnes Award in recognition of her exemplary contributions toward the provision of free legal assistance to the poor and the elderly in Western Michigan.
Fossel, recently named the Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Varnum, received the Michael S. Barnes Award in 2010.
Fossel’s practice focuses on complex business and commercial litigation, employment claims, health care litigation (including defense of providers and professionals in fraud and abuse claims, and malpractice actions), product liability and contested probate matters. In addition to coordinating Varnum’s internal and external diversity and inclusion initiatives, she is on the board of the American Red Cross of West Michigan, the Grand Rapids Ballet, the Ivy Foundation, and the AIDS Resource Center and AIDS Foundation of Kent County.
Fossel will receive the prestigious John W. Cummiskey Award from the State Bar in September.
