SBM section honors Cooley grad for animal advocacy

On May 22, the State Bar of Michigan (SBM) Animal Law Section presented May 2013 Cooley Law School graduate Renee Edmondson with the Wanda A. Nash Award. The award was created to honor a Michigan law student for contributions to animal law and is named in honor of the first chair of the Section, which has been around since the late 1990s. Edmondson was selected from among other law students in the state, all nominated by their animal law professors.

Edmondson, who resides in Grand Rapids, was recognized for her commitment to helping animals. She is the co-founder of the Thomas M. Cooley Animal Law Society and, as reported
in the Grand Rapids Legal News April 17, 2013,  recently played an instrumental role in creating bills now introduced in the Michigan Legislature. These bills would require individuals convicted of animal abuse to register with their local units of government and would establish uniform procedures and minimum requirements for adoption of animals.

Cooley Adjunct Professor Ginny Mikita nominated Edmondson.
