Kilpatrick told to repay state for prison costs

DETROIT (AP) -- A judge has ordered ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to reimburse the state Corrections Department $15,190 for his recent prison stay with proceeds from his book. Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner made the ruling Wednesday after a request from the state attorney general's office. The money will come from an escrow account Groner ordered created for Kilpatrick's portion of profits from, "Surrendered: The Rise, Fall & Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick." Groner already had ruled that before Kilpatrick received money for the book his proceeds would have to help pay off $860,000 he owes Detroit in restitution from a 2008 criminal case. Kilpatrick's defense attorney wants Groner to amend the escrow account ruling. The book went on sale Tuesday at four small Detroit-area bookstores. Kilpatrick was paroled Aug. 2.
