Oakland County officials announce second annual 'Kids First Initiative School Book Bag Giveaway'
On Thursday, Sept. 1, Oakland County Commissioner Janet Jackson joined by Commissioners Nancy Quarles and Helaine Zack will lend their support for the "Kids First Initiative 2nd Annual School Book Bag Giveaway" which will begin at 5 p.m.
This two-hour event is free and open to the public and will be held at the FieldZone in Southfield, located at 26000 Evergreen Road in the Southfield Civic Center Building. Each book bag will include pencils, paper, folders and notebooks. As part of the Kids First Initiative, students will be given neckties and shown how to properly tie a necktie.
To ensure success in the classroom, a mentoring component has been included with this initiative as well as other workshops.
"I am proud to support this exceptional effort and believe that as students prepare for the school year, it is important for them to have the necessary tools to be successful in the classroom and in society," stated Jackson. She stressed the value of the giveaway event by explaining, "This initiative teaches life-skills, such as money management and professional etiquette, which will help students in the workforce."
The "Kids First Initiative 2nd Annual Book Bag Giveaway" will distribute bags at Pontiac Middle School, located at 1275 North Perry in Pontiac, Michigan, on Monday, August 29 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The book bag giveaway will also expand to the communities of Flint and Detroit.
Oakland County Commissioner Mattie McKinney Hatchett, who represents the City of Pontiac, stated "I commend Kid's First Director Mr. Richard Bell, not only, for his continued efforts of educating area youth, but his work on behalf of Pontiac families which has been tremendous."
There is a limited amount of book bags which are given away on a first come-first serve basis.
