University of Detroit Mercy School of Law partners with ABA Young Lawyers Division to serve veterans
University of Detroit Mercy School of Law is proud to announce its partnership with the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABA YLD) to implement a year-long initiative, Project SALUTE: Young Lawyers Serving Veterans (YLSV). Through this initiative, volunteer attorneys will educate veterans on available benefits and assist them with obtaining these benefits.
"This year, the ABA Young Lawyers Division made a commitment to provide veterans with education and assistance in accessing their federal benefits," said Tammy Kudialis, director of UDM Law's Project SALUTE.
"We are excited to partner with them on this initiative, as we are uniquely positioned to help veterans seeking federal benefits assistance, having worked with thousands through our own legal clinics across the country."
Serving as the ABA YLD's National Public Service Project for 2011-12, YLSV will educate veterans on benefits they may be entitled to receive and assist them in completing the required forms to obtain those benefits. At each legal clinic, a multi-media educational video will be shown and trained volunteer lawyers will then consult individually with veterans and assist them in completing applications and guiding them through various requirements and eligibility for federal veterans' benefits.
"Through this initiative, young lawyers across the country will come together to honor and thank the brave members of our Armed Forces who have sacrificed much to ensure the safety and security of our country," said Michael G. Bergmann, chair of the ABA YLD. "With UDM Law as our project partner, we will work to help as many veterans as possible in all fifty states obtain their well-deserved federal benefits."
YLSV will launch on Friday, Oct. 14, at the ABA YLD's Fall Conference in Seattle with future clinics scheduled in New Orleans and Nashville. For additional information about YLSV, visit www.ambar.org/yldservingveterans.
