Cooley prepares to host summer program

Thomas M. Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus will host an opening ceremony from noon to 1:30 p.m. May 31 to mark the start of its month-long College Pre-law Summer Institute (CPSI).

Wayne County Circuit Judge Patricia P. Fresard, the first Hispanic woman to serve on that court, will be the keynote speaker at the event, which is sponsored by the Oakland County Bar Association.

Other sponsors include the Association of Corporate Counsel of Michigan, Collins Einhorn Farrell and Ulanoff, Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, Honigman, Jaffe Raitt Heuer and Weiss, Miller Canfield, Plunkett Cooney, Warner Norcross and Judd along with the State Bar of Michigan Health Law, Law Practice Management.

A partnership of Cooley, Oakland University, Kaplan Test Prep Services and the American Bar Association’s Council of Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO), the CPSI offers students an opportunity to study the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and in law school.

The purpose of the intensive, pre-law program, organizers say, is to help diversify America’s next generation of lawyers through expanding legal education opportunities to students of color, low income students and otherwise disadvantaged students.

“Cooley leads all of the other law schools in Michigan in providing pipeline programs such as this which help promising college students who face racial, economic, or other barriers increase their chances of successfully applying for admission to any law school in the country they choose,” said Cooley Auburn Hills Associate Dean John Nussbaumer. “Instead of just talking about diversity, we are taking concrete action to help the legal profession better reflect the increasing diversity of America’s citizens.”

This year’s CPSI marks the third time that Cooley has hosted the institute.

Participants will hail from the University of California - Berkeley, Creighton University, Ferris State University, Grambling State University, High Point University, Howard University, Michigan State University, Montclair State University, Morehouse College, Oakland University, Purdue University, University of Nevada – Las Vegas, University of Michigan – Dearborn, University of Michigan – Flint, and the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

The program runs to June 29 and is being offered to students completely free of cost.

Additionally, each low-income or otherwise disadvantaged student will receive a free LSAT preparation course from Kaplan Test Prep Services.

The opening ceremony will be held at Cooley’s Auburn Hills Campus, AH 145 2630 Featherstone Road.
