Jury convicts ex-convict in slaying of woman

PONTIAC (AP) -- A jury has convicted an ex-convict of first-degree murder for the home invasion and knife-slaying of an 80-year-old suburban Detroit woman. The Oakland County Circuit Court jury in Pontiac found 49-year-old Alan Wood guilty last Thursday in the death of Nancy Dailey. Forty-one-year-old co-defendant Tonia Watson pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and testified against Wood. Watson's deal means she eventually could be paroled, while Wood's first-degree murder convictism brings a mandatory sentence of life without parole. His sentencing is Feb. 15. Dailey was found tied up in her Royal Oak home on Nov. 20, 2011. Authorities say the parolees befriended Dailey and did yard work for her, then robbed her and slit her throat. The case has prompted scrutiny of the Michigan Department of Corrections over supervision of parolees. Published: Mon, Jan 21, 2013
