Walker Tavern Historic Site open for the 2013 season
Walker Tavern Historic Site, located in Brooklyn, Mich., is now open to the public seven days. The site will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and this season will feature the return of many favorite events, including the Walker on Wheels antique car show, Stagecoach Days and a special Halloween event.
The popular Farmers Market will open Sunday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vintage base ball games will be featured throughout the season with opening day set for, Saturday, May 18, at 1 p.m. when the Walker Wheels face the Royal Oak Wahoos.
''For the first time in many years Walker Tavern Historic Site will be open seven days a week,'' said Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center in Lansing. ''We would not be able to accomplish this without the generosity and financial support of the Friends of Walker Tavern, who sponsor the majority of our summer activities with their time and many talents.''
New this year will be more family-oriented Saturday events, such as Automobile Education Day, Archaeology Day, Christmas in July, Tea with Clara, and a special Tuesday Back to School Day. These programs carry a fee for children, but adults accompanying them are free. Members of the Friends of Walker Tavern receive discounts on programs.
''This summer is all about family at Walker Tavern Historic Site. We planned many of our activities on weekends so that more families could participate,'' said Friends of Walker Tavern President Bonnie McJennett. ''There is nothing like being outdoors and learning about the history of our great state as a family.''
Featured for the first time will be three free evening concerts on the last Tuesday of June, July and August. Bring a picnic to the park and enjoy the music. A naturalist from Hayes State Park will be offering programs at the historic site three afternoons during the summer, and Laurie Perkins, site manager at Walker Tavern Historic Site, will conduct three local history programs at Hayes in return.
''I am looking forward to this jam-packed season of summer fun and excitement at Walker Tavern Historic Site,'' said Perkins. ''Summer is a great time to come out to Walker Tavern and learn more about this area's history and Michigan's great stories.''
Walker Tavern is one of 11 nationally accredited museums administered by the Michigan Historical Center, an agency within the Department of Natural Resources.
