Thomas A. Smith
Thomas Albert Smith, a Detroit-area attorney who specialized in asbestos-related cases as well as product liability and property damage litigation, died Saturday, Nov. 23, at the age of 62.
Smith, an attorney with Michael B. Serling PC Law Firm in Birmigham, worked as an investigator on asbestos and other toxic tort cases since 1985 and as a lawyer since 1996.
He attended Michigan State University and obtained his bachelor’s degree in communications and his master’s degree of industrial and labor relations.
Smith received his law degree from University of Detroit Mercy.
While attending MSU, Smith was a disc jockey at WLIS in East Lansing and later at stations in Detroit, Flint and Chicago.
He enjoyed motorcycling and camping, was a Civil War enthusiast and, in the last four years, was involved in remodeling his home, doing all the carpentry himself.
Smith is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter Jennifer Ann (Jason Klamm) Smith; son Christopher Paul Smith; brother Richard Grant ( Michele) Smith; sister Susan Ann (Neal) Van Eck.
The family will receive friends today from 1-4 p.m. at Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 Twelve Mile Rd in Berkley.
An inurnment committal will take place in the late spring in West Branch.
The family suggested memorials to the Salvation Army, Detroit Rescue Mission or Greening of Detroit.
